[1/9] this is honestly so tragic lol. it shows that human nature is just conservatism. the 91% who voted no largely haven’t had a dyslexic cross their minds, and are arguing about, like, manning up and git gd at spelling… as if the english, who already struggle for brain cells, https://twitter.com/MartinSLewis/status/1386618196938137601

are not wasting years of their potentials as kids on memorising pointlessly misspelt words

i struggle to comprehend the amount of crayons the author of this article had to sniff to turn spelling reform into a TERF-style science-phobic moral panic

(the things that smack of TERFism here are the linguistically braindead “barth” strawman (they don’t care about accents DDD:) and the narcissistic self-centring despite the printing press being the least relevant thing to language in 2024 (most spelling reform is ctrl+f lmfao))

if english spelling gets any harder then eventually english will get replaced with spanish as lingua franca and ppl interested in learning it will drift towards a similar language that actually gets looked after, like norwegian

@spellingsociety have the task of saving english yet have such a paltry following on twitter and an outdated website that seems to focus on reviewing proposals for mandating spelling schemes that’ll never happen

this is the suggestion i put forth to them

spellings change via fluid standards. get the dictionaries together to form a committee that enacts patches that the public upvotes. patches that introduce acceptable alt spellings for small word sets (say o/aught -> aut). patches that deprecate spellings nobody uses

it’d be their job to design the language changes so there aren’t too many alt spellings that clash with each other, to direct the language prototype

we can already choose to write plough or plow. so where is tho? enuff? frend? even u? cos ppl already use these???

you bring in metrics and follow usage trends. each year, ppl get to use some new alts if they want. do deprecations every decade. semantic versioning. if you think about how javascript evolves, a language the whole world speaks, it’s literally just like this

i would like language to have more freedom of expression, to choose which words i wanna use, how to spell them, and to be less gatekept around right ways of doing things that don’t exist outside stuffy academic offices and webpages. living breathing [9/9]
