idr if i commented on this last year but i found it interesting that there were no lgbt pride flags there, smth that’d be unthinkable among the speedrunners for example

i’ve always wanted to go to pride to see what it’s like but i’ve always been a bit sus of the concept

lgbt people have no culture in common w/ each other realistically, cos you can’t turn lived experiences into culture directly. there are loose bits of political history tying them together but nothing universal

let’s take a core example of pride culture – drag

for everyone who associates drag w/ the stonewall rioters, there’ll be someone associating it with grotesque mockeries of passing transsexuals – the zealous makeup and beards say. there’s no stable identity, only a purely political movement with flags that represent nothing

it’s entirely bring-your-own-interpretation of the flags and identities, and it’s contentious cos the stereotypes needed to fashion identity don’t represent most lgbt people. the “history” thus projects one’s own ideology

cos fundamentally, lgbt identity is not cultural at all

contrast with carribean identity – it is political for sure, things like windrush and mangrove, but on a much deeper level, it is the customs they grow up with, parents and ancestors, going back 100s of years

you feel this among the yardies, trinis, the african rhythm ensembles

notting hill carnival is a piss-up for many but i strongly urge people to learn about the culture, go and be present as the people show you what their flags and their cultures are about [7/7]
