“neurodiversity advocates reject the medical model of autism, in favour of an as-yet undetermined social model that blames the problems faced by autistic people on systematic ‘ableist’ discrimination”

“‘we are fighting for our continued existence… against a “cure”, which is a dogwhistle for ableist eugenics’”

(has the phrase “conversion therapy” been used for autists yet?)

“‘ultimately some of us will come to realise that they are not really autistic, but the exploration still helps them find answers about themselves, and no one is harmed in the process’”

“Advocates make the distinction between autistics and ‘neurotypicals’, or nonautistics.—

This fosters an ‘us versus them’ mentality, wherein nonautistic people are regarded as an oppressive enemy. It also fosters intolerance towards different ways of thinking about autism, as well as a deep and unhealthy mistrust of the scientific and medical communities.”

“In standing up for their rights, a group of marginalised people are effectively hyper-marginalising the very people they claim to be advocating for. They have monopolised the public discourse on autism”

(this pov from trans ppl themselves is so buried most ppl dk it exists)

ok, my comment. this is an issue i call “the co-opting of pain”, and it’s smth i have to grapple with in several ways, so it’s gonna be useful to have this article to hand. for example, i have to

1. watch out for which conditions lumardy can co-opt to whitewash his actions

2. mind i’m not misunderstood when i describe my experience of asperger’s and the rather intense destruction it wrought on my life – to not be mistaken for severe autism. i think sdll will be an insightful account for psychologists on how social abuse can destroy ppl on my level

3. to watch out when people deny obvious aspie interactions (like calling a concept stupid leading to others reading a personal attack) as a basis to manufacture consent for bullying. seeing peaches do this to me was tragic cos the guy is clearly autistic himself

4. finally, deal with irl ppl who are so far down the rabbit hole of activist thought that they accuse me of sowing division, conversion therapy and x-phobia for speaking from this pov. i post this article again to clarify where i come from in views on autism and transsexuality

speaking on trans for me comes from recognising how toxic the politics were to everyone online and trying to help, but i am forced by life to look more inwards to autism now

what is threatening isn’t a matter of what’s true but just who is popular

so i have that triple threat i described (points 1–3) to deal with. more generally, there aren’t obvious solutions. we have to first allow open exchange of ideas, but then also critically decide who is victimised and who isn’t, which ways of identifying help and which harm

having said that though, maybe there is one simple solution: the eradication of western social justice activism. that is, the search by power-trippers for victimhood to perform, and the conditioning of those they claim to speak for into victim mentalities [13/13]
