i think maybe the reason i had such good relationships with girls in year 6 is that i was a rabid jacqueline wilson fan. all her books were for girls about girls, and they were super-real, cos i remember reading about dieting, divorce and adoption ofc w/ tracy beaker [1/7] https://twitter.com/peachcrises/status/1769728468197994629

p sure i read all of these lmao. cos their names just roll off the tongue of my inner monologue

i remember explicitly reading the suitcase kid, and girls under pressure i’m sure based on the way the disordered diets were narrated

apparently the “girls” books prominently discussed sex, which is weird to me cos idr any of that, and maybe it’s cos i was 10 and it just went over my head haha

i was def too young to directly relate to the characters and take cues on what to care about from them, to my demise

it was kinda easy come easy go, getting close to girls by reading these and then away from them because of the negativity i internalised from secondary school social politics (i wrote this down today titled “by the hangar” after 8485’s song)

should’ve read more at age 13 ig

before jaqueline, i was big into roald dahl. and at age 12ish, i read the noughts and crosses series, which was likely pivotal for me learning about social justice. while i was 13, i was into like alex rider and artemis fowl, so more male-oriented stuff again

my attitude towards my sex has always superficially been gratitude for its simplicity (no periods…) but ngl the psychology as expressed by jacqueline was always far more relatable to me than anything i was picking up off boys. the one thing missing was my love of practical jokes

it’s a gamut of experience and something to always be open to and to never pigeonhole or constrain with labels

except that you realise you have to adapt around the gender structures that be. it was never fun [7/7]
