i took my cousin for a walk thru holland park and notting hill yesterday and to me this part of london feels like the sacred realm

it’s a part (orange) of my extended neighbourhood (red) that i have deep personal ties to, rooted in some of my earliest memories [1/12]

i went to jazz refreshed at mau mau bar 9 times iirc. my fave drummer richard spaven would say it felt like home, london being the cradle of bass music – dnb, dubstep, ukg, grime, but especially broken beat, which came from ladbroke grove and never left ldn, unlike the others

the serbian orthodox church and sunday school are some of my earliest memories, family friends around the area, walking past ladbroke grove tube with them

i had a friend when i was 8 who lived in one of the latimer road towers

the clash between the ghettoised parts of latimer road and the marble houses of notting hill, the documentary on portland road, that you can see the clash as you walk down it. i lived in destitute housing aged 6 so the grenfell fire rly got to me

key parts of my pokémon go story were in holland park, especially cracking the algorithm for triggering mewtwo, when i whittled down the possible gyms from 5 to 3 and then proactively raided them (once after dark). the pastoral machop grind w/ the older community is a warm memory

holland park was also the natural resting place for carnival days, meetups with my mum’s friend and a picnic with my school friends. it’s easily the best park in london

here’s the tortoises with triangle and time sundial/pokémon go gym

it’s no secret from my last fm that i’m a massive blur fan too and so appreciated their shouts to the westway, air-cushioned soles off the portobello road and their/gorillaz videos with trellick tower (which i walked past for the first time yday and is fucking terrifying)

i remember my mum dragging me thru the stalls on the portobello road when i was small. i remember the “enjoy yourself” graffiti, long gone but immortalised in pokémon go, reminding me what matters each time i went jrf at mau mau

i remember the ecos de españa mural i first squatted next to after a bad jerk chicken burger at nhc 2013 and then walked past while waiting for gigs to start later years

i remember seeing grenfell blacked out only a month after the fire while walking back from my first gig

remember dancing to garage outside a kensal rise housing block at nhc 2018 with a grenfell flag draped over a balcony. remember being proud of my school for housing some of the kids whose school was in the exclusion zone

i’ll finish with the song that most sounds like the realm in my head (and gives a bit of a history of jrf at the end..) [12/12] https://youtu.be/vsWoS0LrS0k
