so i am in 🇷🇸 rn, and a day of mourning was declared yesterday for three serbian insurgents who were killed by albanian police in a majority-serb district of kosovo, all of which is occupied by albania rn

when i say albania, i mean the ethnicity not the state. as a believer in self-determination, i don’t oppose this occupation, nor do i oppose the resistance to it in the serbian-majority areas

the occupiers have been defying international pressure to give these areas autonomy

and in response, the resistance staged a violent insurgency that killed an official policeman

tbh i think it is dodgy for đoković to pray for violent insurgents, bc it’s rather a pro-war position, with muddy wartime context where it fares better to not take sides imo

however, i can’t abide by the erasure of provocation that dominates western thought on this. in serbia, it’s understood that being the weaker party means nothing will ever be done about the non-violent means by which those in power oppress minorities

this drives a sense of nationalism where ordinary ppl see a side to take in a binary war, and support just about anything w/o criticism. we see those militants as our own, acting in our interest

but soon, you find yourself supporting gratuitous violence and have to stop to think

these people are oppressing this minority, so arbitrary violence is justified because we know we have the morally correct position and the oppressors must be [comparison to nazis]

i feel like not much can be done about this and the effect is everywhere and will cause a world war

but i wanna at least urge people to be compassionate over tribal behaviour

like in the đoković example, and prioritise awareness of provocation and power imbalance

erasure of provocation was, for me, how the sms mods turned my conflict with jeffcompass into a year of violence, tension and culture war in that community

one thing i’m proud of is how my people act iz inata, as in, we do not fucking back down. it’s (demonstrably) a mega self-destructive trait on a national level, but it’s worth accepting that some things are in your blood, bigger than you are, and your fate is written in the stars

my dad told me that what probs averted the german invasion of britain in ww2 was the serbs deciding to disobey their king’s capitulation to hitler in 1941 and fuck up the nazis for no reason – at the peak of german power. it just led to their slaughter but y’know. inat :) [13/13]
