had a bunch of thoughts. so i have a fren who’s learnt to speak spanish, but as with most ppl who don’t natively speak a continental european lang, struggles a lot w/ accent

if i wanted to help, i can’t string any sentences together but i can read words off a page p well

i know the vowels, stresses and allophones. so it’s being good at sight-reading. it’s funny how valued this skill is in music yet it’s fairly useless with a lang

but the equivalent in music of the other skill is… also conversation. u hear the phrases of your band, reply to them

a solo is a monologue yeah

the difference between these skills is reflected in the mentalities of classical vs jazz musicians. but bein able to reproduce super complex pictures is… so much less cool than conversing in a simpler, yet living breathing language

it reminds me of that lyric in the bends about “feeling like part of the human race”. that’s what i feel more than any other time, when i’m improvisin music in a live setting, with the abstract language and the feelings u lay down

all 3 of the times life has let me do that
