had this discussion last month taking a critical eye to commentary quality for speedrunning events/showcases. there's an sm64 event on rn so i paid attention to the comms. i think i was right – a good runner turned in a good comm and a regular comm turned in an abysmal one [1/3] https://twitter.com/shoutplenty/status/1639444615404060672

most good runner comms are flat bc they haven't had much thought/prac put into them, but they're miles ahead of only being able to make superficial remarks – "[runner] taking a death there", "ttm is an interesting stage cos it's kinda hard but also kinda not [doesn't elaborate]"

it's very easy to tell when some1 doesn't know what they're talking about or understand nuances of good sports performance

and i'm certain the "showmanship" the regular comms are "good at" is just hot air. need to give more chances to knowledgeable comms fr @globalspeedrun [3/3]
