yea this system where u give the same ppl comms opportunities each time needs to end. they're nothing special as commentators and usually have no community involvement by the time they're called up for the 5th year in a row. it creates a self-sustaining popularity cycle [1/5] https://t.co/Fo0ILqJJnD">https://t.co/Fo0ILqJJnD">https://t.co/Fo0ILqJJnD

from that pov, i also find turning spare comms into a popularity contest objectionable. drawing a parallel with the community's contrasting treatment of equivocalgenius and lumardy as a blunt example of why mob decision-making is total poison

transparency in this situation is to turn comms selection into a meritocratic process. picking runners who recently played at top-level is a band-aid fix for this hastily-planned event. a good long-term solution is to use open-comms-signup any% races (like the weekly ones)

to test, train and nurture promising commentators, then give them the chance to represent sms at large events. giving opportunities to people who actually contribute – events, tutes, modding – is also a very good move

this is always a thorny issue with sms cos external events are rarely hosted for it (a topic for another day), so the chances to represent sms speedrunning are rare. but i'll give @arwymilo a ping so he can take a look at what went wrong last time [5/5] https://gist.github.com/pyorot/ea99c553e7dd3be9febb3639ff611df8
