it almost seems like the same thing at first, but what this does is shift gender from being a subjective feeling of the subject, to an objective reality of the sum of observers – how the subject is seen by society, the expectations it entails, and their impact on the subject

this is also liberating in that it assumes nothing about *why* one desires a different gender role. it’s just an as-is reality, so a good base for figuring out what rights and culture norms those ppl need, w/o assuming any unnecessary metaphysical beliefs about them

i find that with this perspective, most of the issues, contention and cognitive dissonance over trans ppl just slide away, and we return to where we can reason purely with objective concepts like sex, stereotypes and gender roles. we will still reach diverse conclusions, no doubt

the two things that made this click for me are (1) realising that if trans means having a different gender identity, then i am trans, bc i fit any reasonable definition of agender – but i shouldn’t be seen as trans, bc trans oppression and its consequent rights do not fit me
